World Sparrow Day 2022: Date, Theme and Significance

Sparrows were a common sight in the cities, bathing in street-side puddles or dustbathing at the open ground. However, the birds that used to fly and carve everything in the yard and the courtyards are almost hidden from our view today. Our lifestyle and living conditions have posed a challenge to the lives of sparrows. And World Sparrow Day was started to create awareness among the people about the conservation of sparrows.

World Sparrow Day

World Sparrow Day 2011 was a global initiative launched by the Nature Forever Society of India in collaboration with the Eco-Sis Action Foundation (France). World Sparrow Day is now celebrated on March 20 every year.

This day is meant to take action against the declining number of birds on earth and to create awareness among the people about sparrows and their survival.

Purpose

Mohammed Dilawar of the Nature Forever Society started this day for the conservation of birds. He has received many international accolades. He has also received a Time magazine award for his environmental work. Awareness of the importance of sparrows. It had a simple purpose; to inspire people to nurture, maintain and protect it. In 2010, the first World Sparrow Day was celebrated in various parts of the world.

Theme

World Sparrow Day is celebrated on Sunday, March 20. This day is celebrated all over the world with various events. The theme of this year’s celebration is “I love sparrow.”

Significance

Conservation of birds is of paramount importance in this age of climate change and changing lifestyles. Lack of shelter and food often leads to their destruction. One of the most common problems faced by these small birds is habitat change. This day reminds us of the importance of celebrating a day dedicated to birds and raising global awareness. Nature lovers around the world celebrate this day in many ways. Many organizations and NGOs organize campaigns and programs based on the theme of World Sparrow Day.
