Bendery Fort, a 16th-century gem, is located near the medieval town of Bendery, the official name of the place. The castles are situated on the right bank of the Dniester River. This Ottoman fortress saw intense fighting between Turkish and Russian forces before becoming permanently part of Tsarist Russia as recently as the 19th century.

Soroka Fortress displays typical late medieval defenses or fortifications that were highly influenced by Western European architecture. Located in the modern city of Sorocco in the Republic of Moldova, the fort was built in 1499 and took approximately 200 to 250 people to build. Originally a wooden fort, the fortress was built to protect a ford on the Dniester River (a shallow stream). It was an important part which was connected to a chain of other fortifications which included four other forts. Other fortresses are Akkerman and Khotyn on the Dniester River, two other fortresses on the Danube, and three fortresses in the north, located on the medieval Moldova border.
Between the years 1543 and 1546, when Moldova was under the rule of Petru Rareș, the Soroka Fortress was rebuilt in stone. The new structures had five bastions spaced at equal distances and the fort was built in a complete circle. During the Great Turkish War, John Sobieski’s army defended the fortress against attacks by the Ottomans. The fort was of great military importance during the Pruth Campaign of Peter the Great during the 17th century.
