Jakar Dzong in Bhutan The main dzong or is a Tibetan/Bhutanese style fort that overlooks the town of Jakar in Bumthang district. Situated on a hill above the Chamkhar valley, the present fort is built on this site An old temple built by Ralung Hierarch Yongzin Ngagi Wangchuck upon arrival in Bhutan. The fort was built in 1667 to commemorate the victory of Tibetan ruler Phuntsho Namgyal.

A special feature of the Jakar Dzong was the 50 meter high Utse. Another unique thing about the Dzong is that its unique passage is surrounded by two parallel walls that were connected by fortified towers, this gave the population access to food, protection and water during sieges. Although destroyed due to an earthquake in 1897, the rebuilt fort was built smaller than the original fort as per the sitemap.
