International Day Of Action For Rivers 2022: History, Theme

We know the role of water in our body and how it circulates by blending with our blood, moving through intricate capillaries and veins to keep the body nourished. Similarly, rivers around the world, course a map in the form of arteries to become lifelines of our planet.

As per our sensual experience, Rivers are spectacular visual natural water wonders and it is that water body that shimmers back bright sunlight putting a smile on our face on a lazy Sunday evening. However, as a life force itself, rivers have to carve their own legacy by either winding their way through the high altitude landscape or cutting the easiest pathway through a remote part of the land until it reaches the sea.

They are just like animals migrating during a season or millions of people going on a pilgrimage; rivers have a journey and a story to tell. And to pay a tribute and acknowledge that, every year, we recognise March 14 as the International day of action for rivers.

International Day of Action for Rivers is a day to stand in solidarity with the rivers, recognizing how important rivers are to our lives and progress. We as a whole must come together in unison to toil for rivers to save our future and to protect our planet’s biodiversity.

The Aim

International Day of Action for Rivers is a day to raise awareness of the significance of rivers. Addressing issues related to river management, river pollution, river protection, etc.

History

The history of the International Day of Action for Rivers dates back to 1995. In September 1995, the International Reverse Network (IRN), India’s Save the Narmada Movement (NBA), several organizations, including Chile’s Biobio Action Group (GABB) and the European Rivers Network (ERN), held a preparatory meeting in Brazil. As a result, they formed an international organizing committee for those affected by Brazil’s large dams.

In March 1997, in Curitiba, Brazil, participants in the first international meeting of people affected by the construction of dams recognized International Working Day against dams and for rivers, water and life. In addition, they decided that the International Day of Action for Rivers would take place on March 14th. This is how the International Day of Action for Rivers was recognised.

This Year’s Theme

Every year there is a theme for the International Day of Action for Rivers, and last year, in 2021, it was called ‘River Rights’. It demanded that rivers be declared national property and that legal rights be granted to block rivers. The theme for 2022 is “The Importance of Rivers for Biodiversity”.

Environmentalists are conducting workshops, seminars and activities to celebrate this day to raise awareness and spread the message. So, on this International day of action for rivers, let’s join hands to toil for rivers to save our future and to protect our planet’s biodiversity.
