During this process of selecting the best place to spend their honeymoon. They realize it is much more difficult than booking a marriage hall. Because, in this case, the choices are too many to narrow down the top romantic destination in India.

Whatever may be their final decision, the honeymooners would deliberate on:

  • Hill stations because of the cool weather
  • Beachfront resorts
  • Boathouses
  • Forest lodges

The web is loaded with thousands of suggestions for the just-married Indian couples offering their recommendations and arguing for them.

Here are my selections based on my own experience of spending twenty honeymoons spread over the last thirty years. The options of the best places for honeymoon in India are certainly varied but I went to these destinations that guaranteed seclusion and privacy. Hey, buddy, I went only with one single partner during all the 20 honeymoons!

9 best places to visit for a honeymoon in India.

Absolutely beautiful hill stations that are ideal for honeymooners because of the sparse crowd:

Spiti Valley for a honeymoon couple, India

This romantic destination is located on the northeast part of Himachal PradeshSpiti Valley Situated at well over 12,000 feet, you can imagine how solitary the place can be. After all, isn’t that what a newly married couple wants? Even the nearest city Manali is 200 km away.

However, that doesn’t mean you will end up in an uninhabited snow desert. There are several comfortable resorts built thinking of just honeymooners because of their preference for seclusion.

You never have to use the “Do Not Disturb” on your hotel room door.

Giving your company at this alpine honeymoon destination are:

  • Snow and snow everywhere
  • The Spiti River
  • Himalayan brown bear,
  • Bharal-(Blue Sheep) a species of sheep with curved horns
  • Moschus-the musk deer
  • Snow Leopard

If the married couples still yearn for some human interaction, they can visit one or two Buddhist monasteries such as Tabo Monastery or Lhalung Monastery.

The couples, hand-in-hand can stroll along the Rohtang Pass and have a peep over the neighboring country Tibet.

Take a selfie standing on the famous Chicham Bridge, the highest bridge in Asia. Surely, the honeymoon couple can feel ‘on top of the world’ literally.

Below the Chicham Bride lies the gorgeous Parilungbi Canyon.

What a way to spend your first honeymoon on ‘cloud 9’.!

Khajjiar Hill Station for a honeymoon, Himachal Pradesh, India

See, I am skipping all the frequently visited hill stations that include:

  • Darjeeling
  • Kullu
  • Manali
  • Gulmarg
  • Ooty

Of course, these popular hill stations are wonderful tourist destinations but for the first honeymooners…? I am sure you know the reasons for ignoring these popular romantic destinations in this list of 9 best places to visit for a honeymoon in India.

Khajjiar Hill Station for a honeymoon
Khajjiar Hill Station for a honeymoon

My second choice of less-crowded hill town for honeymoon couples is Khajjiar, again a Himachal Pradesh romantic destination.

There is no dearth of villas or luxury cottages in Khajjiar for the just married couples. For pastime, they can see the alpine lake Khajjiar and the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary.

Trekking on the cedar tree forest on the slopes of the Himalayas can be memorably romantic.

In case, you want more action, indulge in paragliding or go and stay in the nearby Dalhousie, another enchanting hilly town on the Himalayas.

Khajjiar is certainly a breathtaking place for spending your honeymoon, first or the tenth.

The pleasantly cool climate of Khajjiar got its name “Switzerland of India”.

Khandala hill station for honeymooners, India

Though this ideal place for honeymoon is located close to two big cities of India namely Mumbai (80 km) and Pune (70 km), not many tourists go to Khandala. It is probably due to the lack of other sightseeing attractions. Unlike Matheran, a very crowded hill station and an expensive too, Khandala hill town is far less crowded and much cheaper to stay than Matheran.

Nevertheless, both Matheran and Khandala are located in Maharashtra and as such, you won’t go hungry because you can’t say ‘the Marathi cuisine is not up to my liking’. Next best to Rajasthani cuisine, the Marathi cuisine is the best in North India.

Khandala is one of the many places for honeymoon in the Western Ghats hill range.

The atmosphere is serene here with tranquil rural sides, misty meadows and fog-filled ravines.

Sightseeing attractions in Khandala include:

  • Rajmachi fort and viewpoint
  • Sunset observation platform
  • Kune Waterfalls
  • Karla caves

Tawang, one of the best places for honeymoon

I bet this is one of the best places for spending your honeymoon but certainly, the least heard of hill station in India because, Tawang is located in Arunachal Pradesh, one of the far-east Indian states.

The far-east is a sheer paradise for nature lovers. There are evergreen hills, breathtaking waterfalls, great lakes, and exotic birds.

In spite of all these, the far-east Indian states are mainly visited by the natives of those states.

Tawang hill station is located in captivating Arunachal Pradesh in India. China is at just a stone’s throw away distance.

The honeymooners’ delight Tawang sits at a mind-boggling altitude of 10,000 feet! I suppose this is one of the conditions laid down by the newly married couples to select their romantic destination.

Even as honeymooners, you don’t get lodged up in your hotel room all through the day-right? Afternoons are tough to kill. You can do that easily and also with pleasure if you choose to visit the Manas National park, a picturesque place to walk hand-in-hand.

You can allocate one full day to go to Shillong and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya state nearby.

If you ask your hotel’s receptionist, he will arrange a guide and a cab to go to Mawsynram, one of the rainiest places in the world. You will be mesmerized by the sight of water-vapour filled valleys in Mawsynram.

But the heartbreaking news is Mawsynram is located at about 600+ km from Tawang in the state of Meghalaya.

I think the overall picture of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh depicts “Dreamy place for Honeymooners”. What do you say?

Lambasingi Valley for a honeymoon, India

Now, I have come down to South India that has several mesmerizing and breathtaking hill stations that include:

Since I am recommending cool and uncrowded places for honeymoon, I am bypassing all the above four highly popular hill stations and recommending an unheard of hill station in Andhra, India.

Lambasingi hill town is at an altitude of 3500 feet only but that doesn’t take its salubrious climate and picturesque settings on the Eastern Ghats, away.

The Eastern Ghats are known for deciduous forests comprising eucalyptus and pine trees. Coffee plantations are cultivated using the trees’ canopy.

The wildlife of Lambasingi Valley is not much except a few gaurs. However, the range of avifauna attracts ornithologists and bird watchers just after the monsoon season.

Have you heard of Arakku Valley, the one and only cool place in Andhra? Well, Lambasingi is part of Arakku Valley.

Trivia: Do you know the snow falls in Lambasingi? “Snow in Andhra”? Can’t believe it-eh? Well, it doesn’t snow every winter in Lambasingi but sometimes, it does. That would be the best time for the second and third honeymooners living in South India. They need not travel a long distance to go to the Himalayas to see the snow.

The big city Vizag (Visakhapatnam) is located at just 100 km from Lambasingi.

Hey just married and about to get married couples of Andhra, did you take notice of this cool place for honeymoon in your own state?

Boathouse for a honeymoon, Kerala, India

The boathouses that roam the backwaters and Vembanad Lake in the Kerala state of India is undoubtedly a wonderful choice for spending the first night by the just married couple. However, a whole honeymoon cannot be planned n a boathouse that will ask you disembark in the late morning every day. Your boathouse is for hire only from noon to the next morning.

Nevertheless, no one stops you from engaging a luxury boathouse for three or four days.

In a boathouse, there is no worry of someone knocking on your door. Imagine spending your floating honeymoon in Kerala with sumptuous food that includes freshly caught fish on Vembanad Lake where your boast is driven by rowing.

Independent cottages for a honeymoon on the banks of Kabini River, India

The River Kabini is a major tributary of the Kavery River. Kabini’s flowing length is 240 km. All along its course, on both sides of its bank, the settings are scenic and peaceful.

Kabini River originates in the beautiful Wayanad district of Kerala state.

It flows eastwards towards Karnataka and in between its journey, Kabini River meets two other Kerala rivers namely:

  • Mananthavady River
  • Panamaram River

When it enters the state of Karnataka, on its banks, several wildlife sanctuaries, tiger reserves, and bird sanctuaries exist.

Wherever there is game viewing, forest lodges and cottages are offering by private parties.

Additionally, if you are a bold couple, you can opt to stay in a tent on an open ground inside the forest but near the vicinity of the Kabini River.

Search for ‘Kabini honeymoon package‘ and you will find plenty of organizers. Once chosen, you will be free of making all the arrangements such as boarding, lodging, and sightseeing.

Kovalam Beach resorts for a honeymoon, Chennai, India

Chennai is one of the four metropolitan cities in India. It has a long coastline. While the beaches within the city limits are very crowded, you will find almost deserted beaches as you move away from Chennai city.

Kovalam beach is located about 50 km from Chennai. The coastline is having numerous honeymoon resorts.

I know one such resort where there is a swimming pool attached to your room!

The accommodation is very comfortable in the beachfront resorts and the food is extraordinary.

Treehouse escape for a honeymoon, India

How about escaping disturbance by staying high up on a treehouse during your honeymoon? There can’t be a better place for honeymooners-right?

This is no ordinary treehouse, folks, but a luxury one. It’s located in Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India.

The Bandhavgarh is rich in wildlife, so much so that if you are an avid game watcher, you may even forget your bride temporarily!

The Bandhavgarh National Park is also a tiger reserve in India.

The luxuries, amenities, and personal pampering offered by the hosts at the treehouse resort in Bandhavgarh National Park beckons just married couples.
