The Ambubachi Mela is an annual Hindu religious festival held in the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati, India. It is held during June and coincides with the full moon day.

According to some translations, the name of this festival is derived from the word Ambu or blood which connotes menstruation in the Sanskrit language. Another translation suggests that it means “the flow of blood”.

It is said that the festival is the celebration of the annual menstruation cycle of goddess Kamakhya which will nurture the Earth and gives health and prosperity.

The festival, which begins with a grand procession of the goddess Ambubachi, lasts for four days. During this time, people visit the temple and offer prayers to the goddess. However, the temple remains closed for three days as people believe that goddess needs to rest as we do in the human menstruation cycle every month.

The festival attracts thousands of devotees from all over Assam and Northeast India who visit this holy place to celebrate this festival with great fervor. During this festival, pilgrims thronged various places like Bodh Gaya, Kashi Vishwanath Temple, India Gate, etc., where they offer prayers to goddess Kamakhya for her blessings and prosperity.
